Choosing Your Fence Material

When you’re looking to add a fence to your property, there are a lot of things to think about, including the material from which your fence will be built. You might already have in mind exactly what you want, but if not, the decision can be difficult.

Not sure what kind of fence material you want? Take a look at these choices:

Wood

Wood fences are the most classic, and for good reason. It’s relatively easy to work with, comes in a variety of styles, and can easily be customized. Getting the right size wood fence is never a problem, for instance; and if you want to paint it, stain it, or hang things from it, you can do that.

It is important to take care of your wood fence to prolong its life, though. If you really want to make it last, apply a seal whenever the wood starts to frequently absorb rain water.

Metal

If there’s a second most common material, metal is it. From chain link to ornamental, there are several different types of metal fences that range from almost purely functional to almost exclusively decorative.

The best thing about metal fences is their sturdiness. They won’t rot from moist soil, although rust is a concern. Painted metal is less likely to rust, so consider painting or sealing your metal fence

Vinyl

On the new wave of fences is vinyl, made of PVC and made to stand up to weather conditions. It comes in many different styles and sizes, can be easily customized, and perhaps most importantly, is extremely low maintenance.

Unlike wood and metal, there’s not much you need to do to vinyl to keep it whole and looking great except to occasionally wash it off.
