Maintaining Your Yard

It’s a good idea to do a good check and maintenance of your yard once or twice a year. This is going to involve a little legwork, but keeping your yard looking great is definitely worth it.

Take a day (or two) and try taking care of these things to keep your yard healthy for the rest of this season and the next!

1. Repairs. The first thing to do is to check fixtures in your backyard. Decks, fences (especially wood fences), fountains, swing sets—anything that can get broken, rotten, or damaged should get a good once over.

Repair the damage or replace the things that need to be replaced. Don’t forget to check the seal on your deck and fence by spraying water on the wood—if the wood absorbs it, it needs to be sealed.

2. Get Rid of Debris. Whether it’s leftover leaves from fall or pine straw coating the yard, getting rid of the layer on top of your grass and plants will allow them to grow rather than being smothered. Rake it out, throw it out, turn it into compost—whatever you do with it, go ahead and get rid of it to make room for new growth.

3. Grow Some Grass. If you have damaged areas in your yard or large spots where no grass is growing, this is a good time to get some started. Take some time to really prepare the soil and seed it to fill in empty spaces.

Don’t forget to also check the gutters if necessary and prune down large plants to help them continue to grow.

If you are looking for a more decorative style instead of the standard privacy fence you may be interested in a French Gothic Picket Fence. The stylish pickets will set your fence apart from your neighbors. The standard 2 ½” spacing between the pickets can be customized to your preference. A picket fence will set a boundary for children and fur babies while maintaining an open feel for your property.
