Three Important Tips for Planting in Your Yard

When you’re looking at doing some landscaping in your yard, there are a lot of aspects to consider, from focal points (water feature? Gazebo? Fire pit?) to fences (ornamental fences? Picket?).

One you thing you would think isn’t too much trouble is planting flowers, but as it turns out, there is some thought that goes into that, too. The size of the planting area matters, the types of flowers matter—how do you know what to choose?

Tips from a Professional Landscaper

Mike at Mike’s Backyard Nursery explained some of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to do their own landscaping, and especially had a couple of tips for getting into planning:

Tip #1: Make Your Planting Bed Bigger. Mike says that homeowners constantly underestimate the amount of space they’ll need for their plants. When you plan your bed, make it bigger than what you think you need, and you will likely find that it’s the right size.

Proper spacing ensures room for your plants to grow properly without being crowded, leaving you with a clean, neat, professional appearance in your yard!

Tip #2: Think About the Future. It’s not uncommon to plant smaller plants and step back and think, “That’s not enough!” Keeping in mind that plants grow and picturing what they’ll look like when they’re fully grown will help you see how to plan your planting.

A lot of plants don’t take long at all to start filling out, so be patient. In the meantime, you’ll have a neat-looking plant bed, and in a month or two, you’ll have a full, healthy landscape!

Tip #3: Do What You Like. Your best friend said that this magazines says these are some of the most beautiful flowers, your neighbor uses a certain type of fern and he suggests you use it for consistency. This book, that guy at the store, this picture on the news all say you’re doing it wrong.

Look at your yard. Do you like how it looks? Do you like the way you believe it will look in the future? Does it feel balanced? Does it match your style? If the answer to those questions is yes, then you’re doing it right!

If you are looking for a more decorative style instead of the standard privacy fence you may be interested in a French Gothic Picket Fence. The stylish pickets will set your fence apart from your neighbors. The standard 2 ½” spacing between the pickets can be customized to your preference. A picket fence will set a boundary for children and fur babies while maintaining an open feel for your property.
