A backyard water feature can be a great addition to any landscaping plan, and there are plenty of choices when you’re looking for one. One of those options you may not have thought of is a pond.

It’s a big feature, but definitely worthy of attention. If you’re looking for something that stands out and gives you hours of enjoyment, a backyard pond might be what you’re looking for.

Types of Ponds

There is more than one type of backyard pond, and choosing one comes down to what you want out of your pond.

Some ponds are just ponds. Filled with aquatic plant life and moving water, these can be exceptionally beautiful. Some ponds are fish ponds, and these can contain both fish and plants or mostly just fish.

If you want plants and fish, you’re going to want goldfish. They are harmless to aquatic plant life and thrive in ponds. However, they can overpopulate. There’s likely a pet store, live fish provider, or pet rescue who take fish from overpopulated ponds.

Looking for something a little more interesting? Koi ponds are a great choice. Koi are a large type of carp, often in shades of orange, white, and yellow. However, koi are more aggressive than goldfish and can damage aquatic plants.

Whichever pond you choose—and whichever fish—make sure you know how to treat the water, plants, and fish to maintain the best possible environment and the most enjoyment!

Pond Placement

Backyard ponds are really meant to be enjoyed, so keep them close to where you spend time in the backyard, such as close to the deck or patio. This way, you and your friends and family can enjoy the pond while you’re chit-chatting or eating together.

There’s a bit of a bonus here, as well; in that it’s easier to wire the electricity for the pond’s filtration system if it’s closer to your house!
